  hot dates
Several weeks ago I planted around 10 date seeds in a pot, and since then have been keeping them warm by a radiator. Finally this week they've been coming up, exactly one per day since Tuesday:



Palm shoots don't come straight out of the seed. Instead, a radicle (embryonic root) grows down from the seed, and then the shoot comes up out of that. The shoot emerges near the seed, like this (I uncovered the seed for this picture):

It doesn't get much sweeter:
